The Importance of Maintaining a Secure Network

Businesses who are successfully compromised by hackers, worms, viruses, or even script kiddies suffer monetary loss due to one or more of the following:

  1. Theft of Intellectual Property:
Theft of intellectual property and sale to competition. This can be secret recipes, blue prints, patent information, or anything else that your businesses holds as intellectual property. It is all salable.

  2. Identity Theft:
Theft of credit cards or social security numbers. While credit cards sell quickly and easily on the black market, social security numbers are of much higher value when sold to the appropriate parties.

  3. Saturated or Disabled Network Resources:
Often times attackers are only interested in making use of the resources available within your I.T. infrastructure. This unauthorized use of your businesses resources slows the efficiency and effectiveness of your business.

  4. Seizure of Compromised Systems:
In some cases the federal government may seize your computer systems for forensic investigation. This is particularly true if your network is used to stage an attack against another network.

  5. Bad Publicity:
In many cases compromised networks result in web page defacements which send a very strong negative message to your clients. For examples of web page defacements please see the attacks archive on www.zone-h.org
